Painting a Hamster: what we pay attention to
A hamster becomes a portrait at four or five times life size. On an 8 × 8 in or 10 × 10 in canvas the round face fills the frame — the bright black eyes, the small round ears, the full cheeks, the tiny paws holding a seed — and the animal has the same dignity as a dog painted at life size. The fur is painted as a soft, dense mass with the direction shown through gentle highlights and a few hairs at the edges of the ears and cheeks.
Golden Syrians are kept warm from cream at the belly to a deeper gold on the back; long-haired teddy bears are painted with the coat in soft masses; dwarfs have their dorsal stripe and their agouti or sable colour matched from a daylight photo. The eyes are painted last, sharp and bright, with a single catchlight.
Sitting up with a treat is the classic pose and also the one that keeps a hamster still long enough to photograph. Hamster memorials are common and are usually painted from a handful of casual photos; send what you have.

Can a hamster really be a portrait?
Yes — painted at four or five times life size, a hamster's face fills a small square canvas and becomes a serious, charming portrait. The bright eyes, the round ears and the full cheeks carry it.
My hamster has passed — I only have a few phone photos.
That is usual. Hamster memorials are painted from casual photos; send everything you have and we tell you what they will support.
Do you paint dwarf hamsters?
Yes — Roborovskis, Campbell's and Winter Whites, with their smaller size, dorsal stripe and colour matched from your photo.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
