Painting a Rabbit: what we pay attention to
Rabbits are painted as velvet. The fur is a dense, soft mass with very soft edges, and the form comes from gentle highlights over the head, the cheeks and the back that show the direction of the coat; individual hairs are drawn only where they catch the light — the edges of the ears, the cheeks, the whisker pads. The eyes are large, dark and set to the side, and the nose is a small, mobile Y that we paint mid-twitch if your photo has it.
The ears decide the composition. Upright ears want headroom on a portrait canvas; lop ears frame the face and suit a square. Rex fur is painted as a plush, dense surface with a soft sheen; Lionhead manes and Angora coats as soft masses with strands at the edges; broken patterns and Himalayan points are mapped at the sketch stage.
A rabbit painted at life size or a little larger on a small canvas has real presence. The loaf — the rabbit settled with its feet tucked — is the pose most owners choose; a straight-on head-and-shoulders study shows the face. Rabbit memorials are among the most common small-pet commissions we do.

Rabbit portrait FAQ
How do you paint rabbit fur?
As velvet — a dense, soft mass with very soft edges and the direction of the fur shown through gentle highlights over the head and the back. Individual hairs are painted only at the ear edges and the cheeks, where they catch the light.
Lop or upright ears — does it change the painting?
It changes the outline. Upright ears want headroom on a portrait canvas; lops frame the face and suit a square. We compose for your rabbit's ears.
Can you paint a rabbit that has passed away?
Yes. Rabbit memorials are common and often painted from a few casual phone photos; send everything you have and we tell you what they will support.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
