Painting a Hedgehog: what we pay attention to
A hedgehog is two textures meeting. The quills are painted as a mass with direction — a crisp, textured surface that follows the curve of the back — with individual quills drawn only at the edge where they cross the background; painting every quill turns the animal into a brush. The face and the belly are painted as soft velvet fur, and the contrast between the two is what makes the hedgehog read as a hedgehog.
The face is small and pointed with bright, dark eyes, small ears and a mobile nose, and the mask — the darker fur around the eyes — varies between animals and is drawn from your photo. Salt and pepper, cinnamon, chocolate, albino, pinto and snowflake colours are matched from daylight.
Painted larger than life on a small square canvas, a hedgehog has a presence out of all proportion to its size. A three-quarter head-and-shoulders study shows the face against the front of the quills; a hedgehog uncurled in the owner’s hand gives scale and is a composition owners like.

How do you paint the quills?
