Painting a Ponies: what we pay attention to

Ponies are painted with the same seriousness as horses and a little more affection. The short, broad head, the small ears, the thick neck and the forelock falling over the eyes are drawn from a photo taken at the pony’s own eye level — from above, a pony is all mane — and the expression, which ranges from wise to wicked, is kept exactly as the photo has it.

A winter coat is painted as a dense, soft mass with the longer hairs shown at the edge and the mane and forelock in long strokes over it; a summer coat as sheen over the form, like a horse. Colour runs across the whole equine range — duns with their dorsal stripes, piebalds and skewbalds with their patches drawn at the sketch stage, greys as soft dapples, palominos warm gold — and is matched from a daylight photo.

A child’s first pony is one of the commissions we do most often for this page — as a memorial, or as a gift when the pony is outgrown — and the child can be painted with the pony from a separate photo, combined at a consistent scale with the layout confirmed as a sketch. Shetlands, Welsh, Connemaras, New Forests, Highlands, Fells, Dales and miniature horses are all painted from the pony in front of us.

Ponies portrait FAQ

Can you paint a child's first pony?

Yes — it is one of the most common commissions we get for ponies, often as a memorial or a gift when the pony is outgrown. We can paint the pony alone, or with the child from a separate photo, combined at a consistent scale.

How do you paint a thick winter coat?

As a dense, soft mass with the longer hairs shown at the edge, and the mane and forelock in long strokes over it. A summer-coat pony is painted with sheen over the form, like a horse.

Which pony breeds do you paint?

All of them — Shetland, Welsh, Connemara, New Forest, Dartmoor, Exmoor, Highland, Fell, Dales, and miniature horses — because we paint the pony in the photo. Tell us the breed and we make sure the head and the outline are right for it.

Do you paint from a phone photo?

Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.

Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?

Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
