Painting a Tortoise: what we pay attention to
Tortoises are painted as two surfaces: a hard, domed shell and soft, scaled skin. The shell’s scute pattern is drawn from your tortoise at the sketch stage — the pattern is individual, and owners know theirs — and painted with a soft sheen where the light strikes the dome and the growth rings shown as texture where they are visible. The skin of the head, neck and legs is painted as scales following the form, with the beaked mouth and the round dark eye as the focal points.
Species are painted as they are: Hermann’s and Horsfield’s with their yellow-and-black shells, Sulcatas in warm tans, red-footed tortoises with their red leg scales, leopard tortoises with their spotted domes. Colour is matched from a daylight photo.
A photo with the head raised — a dandelion or a strawberry held just out of reach does it — gives the classic tortoise portrait: three-quarter, the face and the front of the shell. A full body from the side on a landscape canvas shows the whole pattern. A tortoise that has been in the family for decades is one of the commissions we are most often asked for on this page.

Tortoise portrait FAQ
How do you paint the shell?
As a hard, domed surface with the scute pattern drawn from your tortoise at the sketch stage, painted with a soft sheen where the light strikes the dome. The growth rings on each scute are painted as texture where they are visible.
The face is small — will it be a likeness?
Yes. The beaked mouth, the round dark eye and the scaled neck are the face, and tortoise owners recognise their animal's expression at once. We paint it from a photo with the head raised.
Can you paint a tortoise that has been in the family for decades?
Yes, and it is a common commission — a tortoise that has outlived several dogs deserves a portrait. Old photos can be combined with new ones.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
